4.3 Protein targeting

All proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm by ribosomes.

The proteins are then transported to their appropriate destination: This is called targeting.

Examples of targeted destinations:

  • Nucleus (example: DNA polymerase)

  • Exterior of the cell (example: Insulin)

  • Plasmic membrane (example: The protein containing specific sugars that determine blood types.)
