Since 2009, the CERMEL in Gabon performs tests on a vaccine candidate called "RTS, S", designed by GSK laboratory in the 90s.
This test was introduced and developed in Gabon with the technical and financial support of several international partners including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as Germany. Tests were conducted for 4 years on 15 460 children under 5 years in Gabon and across six African countries, namely Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania.
These tests showed that the candidate vaccine "RTS, S" has drastically reduced the number of cases of malaria among young children, including infants.
