Global Approach for Biological Research on Infectious Epidemics in Low income countries

Laboratory

In March 2005, the IPB , CAMS and bioMérieux, with the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Health, signed a cooperation agreement in Beijing to jointly establish the Joint Laboratory for Emerging Pathogen Identification.

This laboratory, operational since October 2006, is mainly dedicated to the discovery and identification of new pathogens and the development of new technologies for the diagnosis, prevention and control of new emerging infectious diseases. Dr. Christophe Mérieux, the former Senior Vice President of bioMérieux and the Vice President of Fondation Mérieux, had greatly contributed to the success of this cooperation. Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly in July 2006. In March 2007, in memory of Dr. Christophe Mérieux the Joint Laboratory for New Emerging Pathogen Identification was renamed 'Dr. Christophe Mérieux Laboratory (CML)', which is an important step in the history of the friendship between China and France.

In order to further highlight the social benefits of the project and its applied scientific research on infectious diseases in developing countries, Fondation Mérieux replaced bioMérieux to become the French partner of this project. The CML joined the GABRIEL network of laboratories supported by Fondation Mérieux in January 2008.

Missions

  • Identification of unknown pathogens causing infectious diseases and research on the etiology and epidemiology of respiratory viruses and new emerging viruses.

  • Development of technological platformd for rapid detection and identification of common and new emerging viruses, including genomics, proteomics, and microarray technology.

  • Research on system biology, clinical virology, pathogenesis and novel prevention and control technology of new emerging infectious diseases.

  • As a member of the GABRIEL network of Fondation Mérieux, provide technical trainings and support to laboratory researchers from low-income developing countries.

Facilities

The Dr Christophe Mérieux Laboratory (CML) has a surface are of around 400 m2, including 60 m2 of a biosafety level-2 laboratory (BSL-2), 20 m2 of a sample storage house and shares a biosafety level-3 laboratory (BSL-3) in cooperation with the Institute of Laboratory Animal Sciences, CAMS.

The facilities of these laboratories provide a reliable guarantee for the biosafety of laboratory activities. CML has been equipped with world's top-grade instruments, including:

  • Glove box

  • Biosafety cabinet

  • Biochip system

  • EasyMAG automatic nucleic acid extraction system

  • Easy Q real-time quantitative nucleic acid detection system (NASBA)

  • Gel electrophoresis imaging system

  • Low-temperature and highspeed centrifuge

  • Super low-temperature refrigerator

  • Fluorescence microscope

  • Real-time PCR machine

  • AKTA protein purification system

  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

  • Luminescence microplate reader

  • Automated pipetting workstation

  • Dual band IR laser imager

  • Ultracentrifuge
